TV Rewind: ‘There’s No Place Like Homecoming’ for the ‘Pretty Little Liars’

With only 10 episodes left — and six months before they premiere — Screener wants to take a look back through the twisty mysteries and tangled lives of everyone’s favorite “Pretty Little Liars.” So join us daily as we revisit Rosewood of old. The entire show is streaming on Netflix if you’d like to watch the episodes for yourselves.

Up next, Season 1, episode 6: “There’s No Place Like Homecoming,” aired July 13, 2010.

What we thought then …

That Toby (Keegan Allen) is in cahoots with his stepsister, Jenna (Tammin Sursok), and that his tattoo — “901 free at last” — means that’s the day he killed Alison (Sasha Pieterse) and was finally free of her torment.

We meet Lucas (Brendan Robinson) and he could not be more adorable with his crush on Hanna (Ashley Benson).

The “A” tag wants you to think Emily (Shay Mitchell) died at homecoming while being chased by Toby.

What we know now …

Toby got the tattoo to mark the date he was free from Jenna, not Alison.

Lucas’ love for Hanna really is undying — it’s still going strong all these years later. Consequently, it will break our hearts if the final 10 episodes pass without some kind of happy ending for him.

The amazing “A” tag at the end — seriously, it’s one of the best — doesn’t mean anything. Nobody died that night (that we know of).

Hindsight hilarity …

The show goes to great lengths to make Toby seem incredibly dangerous, which is just laughable now. But it does establish an on-going theme of the Liars (one, some or all of them) jumping wildly to conclusions and overreacting.

Creepiest dude award goes to …

There are hardly any candidates this episode, but it kind of goes to Toby by default. Not because he’s actually being creepy, but because the show is framing his actions as creepy.

“I’ve also done things that I’m not proud of. We’ve all got secrets, Emily,” says Toby, as he advances toward her in a menacing manner. Turns out he’s about as dangerous as an excited puppy dog, but the show sure wants you to think he’s out to kill Emily.

We would love to give Ezra (Ian Harding) a three-peat, but he’s actually pretty mature, realizing that Aria (Lucy Hale) should be having fun boys her own age. Of course, that lasts all of a day, but for just this episode … good job, Ezra.

Best ‘A’ message … (tie)
