The controversial yet still highly anticipated live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell debuted a series of five 10-second teasers last night during the latest episode of Mr. Robot, and outside of the racial casting issue it looks like it’s going to be a very faithful adaptation in terms of its visuals, as if aiming to recreate shots exactly from the 1995 anime version.
Together the handful of glitchy clips make the movie seem dark yet stunning. We see a few scenes with Scarlett Johansson as The Major, a cyborg policewoman, and Takeshi Kitano appears in another as Chief Daisuke Aramaki. Others show off fantastic production and costume design for the sci-fi action flick, which is being helmed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman).

The first teaser above showcases a geisha android with a mask designed by Weta Workshop (see this and others on display at Comic Con here), and the scene would seem to be taken from the first episode of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex animated series where Johansson and her Section 9 team deal with a hostage crisis in a geisha house (see the original scene here). But it’s hardly enough to go on to be sure.
Ghost in the Shell was originally a manga comic by Masamune Shirow and was first adapted into a popular Japanese animated feature by director Mamoru Oshii. That led to sequels and TV spinoffs. Reportedly the plot of the live-action movie is based on the “Laughing Man” storyline of Stand Alone Complex (Michael Pitt is playing the villain Laughing Man), but this is the most we have as far as an official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
Check out the rest of the teasers below. Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31, 2017.
