“How to Get Away with Murder” has done a great job of fleshing out its main cast this year, digging into the pasts of Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Laurel (Karla Souza)… Plus, who could ever forget Wes’ (Alfred Enoch) tortured past involving his mother’s suicide and Mahoney’s (Adam Arkin) involvement?
The two character we hope get the backstory treatment next are Connor (Jack Falahee) and Asher (Matt McGorry).
We’ve gotten tidbits over the years — like Asher’s awful secret of Trotter Lake, or Connor’s offhand comment that he has no idea who or where his father is. We thought we’d for sure get more dirt on these two in Season 3, but with everything going on — between The Sheet, Mahoney, and Frank on the run — there hasn’t been much time to explore other plots.

But we’re holding out hope for the back half of Season 3 — mostly because we’ve got a nagging feeling Sam’s murder is about to come back up again, in the worst way possible…
Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) has been putting the pieces together, and soon enough he’ll realize exactly what happened to Sam and exactly who did it. Obviously, Connor and his relationship with Oliver (no matter how damaged at the moment) will be a huge part of that plot — which would provide the perfect opportunity to dig into Connor’s history.
Learning more about how Connor became the person he is might shed some light on why he constantly seems to be hooking up with guys he shouldn’t, and why he reacted so hysterically to Sam’s murder.

On Asher’s side, we haven’t heard much from him since his father committed suicide, since he’s been preoccupied with getting Michaela to acknowledge their relationship for what it is. The last time we saw his family, his mother basically disowned him for causing his father’s death, which took an incredible toll on Asher — such a toll, in fact, that it drove him to kill the prosecutor who snowballed the situation in the first place.
Is Asher still estranged from his family? Did his mother cut him off? How’s he even paying for law school? And where is this elusive sister he rarely mentions? These are all questions we need answers to!
Now that we’ve gotten at peek at Laurel and Michael, here’s hoping Season 3 with give us some clues about Connor and Asher too.
“How to Get Away with Murder” returns Jan. 19, 2017 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
