What to Watch Tonight: Happy New Year, Charlie Brown, Beavis and Butt-head, and the New Syfy Series Three Inches

What to watch on Thursday, December 29…

Don’t think about how weird and quiet and unfun this week has been (because it totally has, right?) and think instead about the upcoming new year! It’s almost here, and it’s gonna be fun! Meantime, check these out:

HOLIDAY SPECIAL, 8pm, ABC
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown
Tonight ABC rebroadcasts this 1986 Peanuts special in which Charlie Brown spends a New Year’s Eve party reading War and Peace. Plus, appended to the special is the Peppermint Patty short She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown, in which Snoopy helps the brusque brunette train for her first ice-skating competition.

SERIES PREMIERE, 9pm, Syfy
Three Inches
It’s hard to say what exactly Syfy’s intentions are in dumping this long-awaited new series onto the schedule during a holiday week. Heck, Syfy hasn’t even set up an official show page yet on its website. So, whatever: Three Inches is a comedic superhero tale starring Buffy‘s James Marsters. It’s about a team of superheroes with underwhelming powers, including one man who can use his mind to move any object three inches. Don’t get too attached?

SEASON 8 FINALE, 10pm, MTV
Beavis and Butt-head
The boys conclude their triumphant comeback season with a pair of new segments. In the first, they attempt to enter a bordello, and in the second they find themselves stuck in an elevator with a beautiful woman. Come back soon, Mike Judge!

SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, TLC
Hook, Line, and Sisters
In TLC’s newest documentary series about lady fishermen, the cameras follow a commercial fishing family (which includes two daughters) as they prepare for salmon season in Alaska.

10pm, PBS
Independent Lens
This installment of Independent Lens is titled “These Amazing Shadows” and focuses on the National Film Registry and its collection of movies considered to be culturally significant. In addition to clips from these occasionally weird films, we’ll get expert commentary from such luminaries as Christopher Nolan, Rob Reiner, Tim Roth, John Singleton, Zooey Deschanel, and John Waters. Finally, something classy on PBS!
