We may have said goodbye to one superhero — and Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) sob-sob-sob! — on Monday’s (Oct. 17) “Supergirl,” but we also said hello to another.
Mon-El (Chris Wood) has been shrouded in mystery for the first two episodes of the season, but now that he’s awake, we should expect to find out more about him and what exactly he’s doing on earth. And most importantly, why on earth he’s strangling the life out of Kara (Melissa Benoist)?!

To shed some light on Mon-El, we asked executive producer Andrew Kreisberg to give us some clues about where he comes from and where he’s going.
“For the next episode, he’s the prime suspect in this assassin that’s trying to kill the president,” Kreisberg says. “The last thing Mon-El remembers was being on an alien world, and he jumped into a pod, and suddenly he wakes up on a strange world.”
That alien world was Daxam, meaning he’s not a Kryptonian like Kara and Clark (Tyler Hoechlin). He does, however, end up getting a super charge from the yellow sun like they do.
“He’s all alone, he’s surrounded by people with guns and he ‘s having a reaction,” Kreisberg teases. “He’s reacting to the fact that he has superpowers, which he wasn’t expecting. How that story weaves about, and how he and Kara come together by the end is hopefully pretty clever and interesting.”
It sounds to us like once the disorientation of waking up a million miles from home in a scary, government facility wears off, Mon-El might not be such a bad guy.
That doesn’t mean, however, that he and Kara will be braiding friendship bracelets for each other anytime soon.
According to Kreisberg, there will be a bit of a rivalry between the two. “We’re going to explore in our universe the idea that Daxam and Krypton were sister worlds, but they didn’t really get along. As somebody says, it’s sorta the Hatfields and the McCoys. So there’s a lot of innate hostility that Mon-El and Kara have for each other simply because of their backgrounds, which is interesting because Kara’s not exactly on her best behavior and we always think Kara is so interesting when she’s flawed.”
It sounds like an exciting bit of backstory for both Mon-El and Kara is headed our way. Now that we know he won’t be considered Kara’s family member, we can’t help but wonder if Mon-El might be a potential new love interest for her.

“Supergirl’s” Season 2 opened with the rather abrupt end to Kara and James’ flirtation, which made sense given their lukewarm chemistry. It does, however, leave a gaping hole in Kara’s life where romance is considered.
An old inter-planetary rival with superpowers (and a high dose of hostility) — who just so happens to look like he’s stepped out of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog — has our relationship radar on high alert.
We’ll keep a close eye on Mon-El in the coming weeks, which will hopefully distract us from the fact that Clark had to head back to Metropolis for good. He may pop up in the future though, since Kreisberg alluded to some possible plans for Hoechlin later this season. “Hopefully. We’re working on it,” he says. “Hope springs eternal.”
As for whether or not Superman’s classic “I’m with her,” line was a subtle nod to Hillary Clinton, Kreisberg had only this to say: “Oh, hell yeah.”
