Now that we’ve got all the puzzle pieces we need to figure out how Jack (Milo Ventigmiglia) died, back when the kids were teenagers, the first season of “This Is Us” has answered almost all of our questions. The one that’s still lingering on our minds, however, is how in the world Miguel (Jon Huertas) became part of the Pearson pack in the first place.
There have been subtle hints that Miguel developed feelings for Rebecca sprinkled throughout the season, but it’s been a very subtle climb. From his lecture to Jack about treating her right to his too-pointed explanation of how his own marriage fell apart, Miguel seems like he’s been waiting in the wings for his best friend’s girl for a while now. To be frank, we were genuinely concerned that Jack and Rebecca’s marriage would fall apart, which would leave the door open for Miguel to swoop in.

Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like any cheating or emotional affairs are on tap for Miguel — at least, not for Season 1.
Up until the moment of Jacks’ death (in what we can only now assume will be a drunk driving accident), his marriage has been holding itself together by the fingertips. Still, it’s easy to tell that the love between both Pearson parents is real, and the foundation of their marriage is pretty unshakeable. We can at least rest assured that there’s no way Miguel will cause the end of their marriage.
What we’re still confused about, however, is how Miguel will manage to win Rebecca’s heart after she loses her husband.
Did he wait a respectful amount of time after his best friend’s death before starting something up with his wife? Or did Rebecca’s grief make him a shoulder to cry on? Plus, how did the kids react to “Uncle Miguel” becoming their stepdad? From what we know of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) relationship with Miguel in the future, they can’t have taken it very well…

With only one episode left in the first season — which will likely focus predominantly on Jack’s death and the aftermath for his family — it’s not looking like we’ll get this mystery explained.
But hope springs eternal for Season 2, where we’re sure to get even more backstory on everyone. We still need to find out about the destruction of Kevin and Sophie’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) marriage, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Randall’s birth mother makes her way into his life now that he’s lost William (Ron Cephas Jones).
“This Is Us” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
