William Petersen, who played played forensic entomologist Gil Grissom on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation before leaving the hit series in 2009 will appear in an upcoming episode of the crime drama, will return for a guest spot on the show this spring.

Petersen has already filmed a cameo that will air at date to-be-announced later this season, Entertainment Weekly said Monday. When Petersen was replaced on CSI by actor Laurence Fishburne almost two years ago, he and the show’s other producers indicated Grissom would show up in the series from time to time.

“I think there’s a way for the audience to remember him, like losing a great co-worker they’ve known for years,” he told EW at the time. “He didn’t die in a plane crash, he didn’t get a brain tumor. He’s out there.”
