Even though “Emerald City” is nearly at its halfway point this season, the sci-fi-series hasn’t stopped churning out big surprise twists. And this is an especially impressive feat considering the show is based on L. Frank Baum’s “Wizard of Oz” books, which have been around for over 100 years. Producers David Schulner and Shaun Cassidy, along with the vision of director Tarsem Singh, have somehow been able to keep the magic and the heart of the original stories, while simultaneously elevating them to modern times.

So far, most episodes have ended with unexpected cliffhangers, but it’s the first few minutes of Friday night’s (Jan. 20), “Science and Magic” that left us in shock. We’ve been wondering when and where the Tin Man character would appear, but apparently, he’s been right in front of our eyes the entire time.
The best part of discovering that Jack (Gerran Howell) is the Tin Man, is learning he’s not dead. There’s still much we don’t know about this character, and his death had seemed premature. After Tip (Jordan Loughran) accidentally pushed him over the balcony, Jack was taken in by the town’s mad scientist, and brought back to life with a custom bionic body. Similar to his best friend’s reaction after turning into a girl, Jack is hysterical upon seeing his new mechanical figure. He seems himself as a deranged monster. In addition to not knowing where exactly he is, how he got there, or where Tip went, Jack is understandably freaking out.
…Until he gets his sea legs. With the help of Jane (Gina McKee), who is much less a mad scientist and more a genius engineer — shoutout to women in STEM! — Jack learns how maneuver around comfortably in his new body. While he’s uneasy about the new heart implanted in his chest, Jack realize that he’s actually quite lucky. This whole new lease on life — it’s a gift. But we soon find out he actually is a gift. A very expensive one at that.
Jack 2.0 now belongs to the Ev kingdom’s princess, Lady Ev (Stefanie Martini). While it was never Jane’s intention to give him up, she doesn’t have a choice once Lady Ev takes a liking to the young boy. We don’t know much about Lady Ev other than her wildly odd sense of humor, and the wildly exquisite face mask she’s always wearing. We’re not sure what her plans are for Jack, whether he will live the life of a servant, or become a kept man. Jack could very well run away at the start of episode 5, and it won’t matter either way! We must wait and see.

However, something we thought we’d be waiting forever to see, finally happens in the episode: Dorothy (Adria Arjona) and The Scarecrow (Oliver Jackson Cohen) share their first kiss, and it is all of the magical moment we expected it would be.
These two beautiful creatures in Oz have been tiptoeing around their sexual chemistry since the day they met, and it is beyond satisfying to see them finally do something about it. Unfortunately, it happens the night before the guards that have been hunting Dorothy finally capture and arrest her, so this love story must be put on hold for a moment. It’s finally time for Dorothy to meet the all powerful Wizard of Oz (Vincent D’Onofrio).
“Emerald City” airs on Friday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and it is fantastic.
