The next Spider-Man film will be called The Amazing Spider-Man, Columbia Pictures said Monday, shortly after releasing the first image of The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield in character as the famed webslinger.

The film — based on the Marvel Comics character popularized by cartoonist Stan Lee — will be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves. The prequel features an all-star cast of Hollywood heavyweights, including Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, and Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Uncle Ben and Aunt May.

Spider-Man is one of the most successful franchises in movie history. The 2002 film, its subsequent sequel, Spider-Man 2, and the last release — 2007′s Spider-Man 3 — earned a combined $1.1 billion at the North American box office, according to industry tracker boxofficemojo.com.

The Amazing Spider-Man, shot entirely in 3D, is set to debut in cinemas on July 3, 2012.
