Tony Soprano, a funny guy? James Gandolfini — who famously portrayed the Jersey Mafioso on the award-winning drama The Sopranos — is hoping to strike gold twice by returning to Tony’s old stomping ground at HBO for a possible starring role in a new network comedy about a politically incorrect New York City cab driver who is “struggling to keep his life together.”

Comedy scribe Dave Flebotte, whose writing credits includes the ABC dramedy Desperate Housewives.

Deadline Hollywood snoops write: “HBO is teaming with James Gandolfini to develop a U.S. version of the hit French Canadian single-camera comedy series Taxi-22 as a potential starring vehicle for the Sopranos star….”
