An increasing number of people are turning from traditional TV of major broadcasters to on-demand viewing using online services, and the move is being spearheaded by children.

Fairfax says that ABC’s iView is among the online services benefiting from the development, and has become increasingly popular since its launch three years ago as more homes get broadband.

Around one million visitors watch programs on iView every month now, with Fairfax saying that people want to watch TV programs when they are ready, rather than waiting for networks to show them.

Many of them are children, going for shows including Bananas in Pyjamas, Octonauts and Peppa Pig.

Foxtel has also moved to allow subscribers to watch shows on computers, SBS has full episodes on its website and the Nine and Seven Networks show some programs online.
