Wow, have you heard that Oprah Winfrey’s going to host next year’s Oscars?
That’s news to Academy president Tom Sherak, who told The Hollywood Reporter that no talks have taken place with the former talk show queen.
“The camera loves Oprah. Oprah’s a genius. But it’s not true, and I don’t know where that story even came from,” Sherak says.
The story apparently began with a Chicago Sun-Times post that claimed, “Winfrey is topping the list of candidates to host the 84th Oscars.”
Sherak explained that choosing a host before a producer just isn’t the way things are done. “First, I have to hire a producer, and then the producer comes to the Academy with suggestions for the host. So how could we have a host without a producer?”
He hopes to choose a producer within the next month, so he can present his choice at the Academy’s next board of governors meeting August 2. The producing team will need months to prepare for the annual awards show, which will be broadcast on February 26.
While Oprah doesn’t have the gig now, that doesn’t rule her out entirely. She’s presented many times at the awards ceremony, including this year’s Documentary Feature award, and she was nominated in 1986 for ‘The Color Purple.’ With her talk show off the air, her presence might bring a much-needed ratings boost to the show.
Do you think Oprah would make a great Oscar host?
