PVR Director’s Rare initiative brings another engrossing and entertaining movie – Good Night | Good Morning under its banner. The movie is an independent romance film starring Seema Rahmani, Manu Narayan, Vasanth Santosham and film critic Raja Sen.
Good Night | Good Morning is largely a black and white split screen conversation film, set and majorly shot in New York City between Christmas and New Year’s eve. Writer-Director Sudhish Kamath attempts to discover good old-fashioned romance in a technology-driven mobile world as the boy Turiya, driving from New York to Philadelphia with buddies, calls the enigmatic girl staying alone in her hotel room, after a brief encounter at the bar earlier in the night. The boy has his baggage of an eight-year-old failed relationship and the girl has her own demons to fight. Scarred by unpleasant memories, she prefers to travel on New Year’s Eve. An all-night phone call becomes a surreal, dream-like experience especially when the limited validity of the adventure gives you the freedom to be who you want to be.
The movie has got rave reviews during its festival rounds at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), South Asian International Film Festival, New York, Transilvania International Film Festival, Cluj, Romania and Noordelijk Film Festival, Netherlands. The film has been rated 3.97 on 5 by the audience at Transilvania and 7.11 on 10 at Netherlands.
Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, JMD, PVR Ltd., says, “Most content driven films are comparatively inexpensive in comparison to the star driven masala entertainers. But very few of these films find distributors because most distributors in India are still driven by star, budget and money. Remaining corporate distributors barely choose 5-6 such films in a year. So there is a huge need to bring niche cinema to the discerning audience which values and understands a great storyline. With PVR Director’s Rare initiative, we constantly strive to bring the new age cinema to our patrons and provide a platform to content driven movies like Good Night |Good Morning, it is a standout effort by an Indian film maker. The film makes you think and you find yourself pondering over old relationships, realizing the need to forgo and let go of the past. ”.
Good Night | Good Morning is one of the rare films that is being released without a print and publicity budget especially during a time when films have been setting apart a minimum budget of Rs. 5 crores towards print and publicity costs.
The director, Sudhish Kamath explains further, “I didn’t think it was possible for a small film to get a release as big as what PVR is providing us in this climate of big films bombing the market with spends of Crores of rupees to generate hype. An audience gets the cinema it deserves. If you encourage films with big budgets, they are only going to get bigger. If you come watch a small film in the theatre, you may actually allow another small film to release.”
Good Night | Good Morning will release on January 20 in PVR cinemas at Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai through the PVR Director’s Rare initiative.
