David R. Ellis, the director of 2006′s “Snakes on a Plane,” has passed away at the age of 60.

Deadline confirmed that the director died in South Africa, during pre-production of “Kite,” on Monday. The cause of death is unknown.

Released as two halves in Japan, the 1998 anime was directed by Yasuomi Umetsu and told the story of a sexually abused orphaned schoolgirl, Sawa, who becomes an assassin.
