Academy Award-winning screenwriter Frank Pierson has passed away at the age of 87.

Pierson is best known for his Oscar-nominated screenplays “Cool Hand Luke,” “Cat Ballou” and “Dog Day Afternoon,” the latter of which won him the gold in 1976. The Hollywood staple also served as President of the Writers Guild of America, from 1981-1983 and again from 1993-1995.
