'The Raid' Remake Is Back On, This Time With Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo

The Raid

The Raid is one of the best action movies of the last few years. It’s a surprisingly complex story of police, drug lords, corruption, and an officer just trying to keep his head down and do right by his community. It also happens to feature some of the best action scenes you’re ever going to see in a movie. It’s utterly fantastic.

There’s only one catch with The Raid, though. It’s not in English, it’s Indonesian. That means it’s a ripe candidate for a redo in Hollywood. A remake was actually announced back in 2014 with director Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3) and starring Taylor Kitsch. Obviously that version never happened, and we’re quite glad it didn’t, because now it means Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) can bring it to life with actor Frank Grillo.

Carnahan broke the news on social media with a video of himself and Grillo debating doing the project. In it they throw out the idea of relocating the setting to Venezuela. We’re not sure if that’s the exact plan or just some fun spitballing for the announcement, but either way, these guys are an exciting choice for this kind of a project. Original director Gareth Evans is also producing the movie, which Carnahan calls a reimagining.

Remake. Reimaginging. Reboot. Redo. Whatever they want to call it, that trio in place making an action movie together has us eager to see this thing get up and running.
