A few dozen TV critics and reporters toured the set of “The Mindy Project” on Tuesday (July 31), and the cast and crew led them right into a big Season 2 plot point.
A banner reading “Happy Wedding Day” hung over a door. Presents covered the kitchen counter. A cake sat on a table. So, who’s getting married? (Spoilers coming right up.)
“Oh, yeah,” creator and star Mindy Kaling says when the subject inevitably comes up. She and a couple writers have a brief conversation about what they can say, and a reporter points out that several people have notice the cake reads “Happy wedding Casey and Mindy.”
“I think the secret’s out,” executive producer Matt Warburton deadpans.
Casey (Anders Holm), you’ll recall, was Mindy’s minister boyfriend at the end of last season. She decided to follow him to Haiti in the season finale, and the Season 2 premiere will show them both in Haiti and after they return.
“In the premiere, Mindy and Casey come back, and we want to explain how that happens. … There is a wedding — we have a wedding in this apartment, a quick wedding, an impromptu wedding,” Kaling says. “Because it’s an impromptu wedding, they get a cake — they only have, at the exotic cake store, a cake that looks like a penis or a cake that looks like a Torah. Mindy is like, we’ll take the penis cake. It’s one of the more offensive scenes we’ve ever shot.”
It doesn’t sound like the union is built to last, though. Prior to the set tour, Kaling said in a press conference that “Mindy gets to be single again pretty soon.”
Season 2 of “The Mindy Project” premieres Sept. 17 on FOX.
