The ‘Timeless’ secret that’s been staring us in the face the entire time

The broad scope of NBC’s latest hit series, “Timeless,” can be overwhelming. With only one rule — never traveling to the same time period twice — the writers have kept a smart balance between the fun, embedded history lessons and staying wry and chill even in its most melodramatic moments.

With so many different places the show can possibly go, the full details on the four leads have remained shrouded in mystery. But when the time-traveling trio visited Washington, D.C. during the Watergate scandal, we finally got answers to some of our most burning questions. And if our theory is correct, there’s another familial connection right before our eyes.

Flynn (Goran Visnjic) says he and Lucy (Abigail Spencer) are going to be “quite the team” in the future, and her journal proves it. But how exactly he got hold of her future musings is still unknown, but as we connect the dots, we’ve decided there’s a good chance Flynn will turn out be Lucy’s brother. Hear us out.

First of all, there has to be some reason Lucy, Rufus (Malcolm Barrett), Wyatt and Flynn were chosen for this highly secretive operation: Any historian, scientist, and war hero could’ve been picked, but these three were specifically hand-selected, and by Rittenhouse no less, which makes it even more suspect. Discovering its head honcho Benjamin Cahill is Lucy’s biological father, raised more questions than it answered: Why would her dad would pick his own daughter for these perilous adventures — and why he would keep it a secret for so long?

Knowing Flynn isn’t Lucy’s father helps to clarify their strange connection — and romance seems unlikely. After all, the electric chemistry between them is nothing compared to the bond between Lucy and Wyatt (Matt Lanter).

Aside from their noticeably similar looks, Flynn and Lucy’s exact link — whether it’s Lucy’s biological father, stepfather or mother — makes them both members of the all-powerful Rittenhouse, no matter what it is: Established in 1778, Rittenhouse is something you’re born into — and if her father is the current leader, Lucy’s one by default. If she never knew about this connection until now, it’s conceivable that Flynn could also be a latecomer to such information.

Furthering down this rabbit hole, if Lucy learns that the father she never knew is responsible for killing Flynn’s family, it’s easy to guess where her loyalty will lie: She’d help Flynn without hesitation, to clear his name and get his family back. And even if they aren’t related in this way, it’s clear Flynn is not the enemy here. Flynn’s main purpose for traveling through time is a noble effort to get back his murdered wife and daughter. But if they are siblings, and Lucy’s sister is still MIA from the ripple effects of time-travel, she’s going to do whatever she can for the family she has left.

The journal in question also reveals Lucy will do something horrible in the future, something so awful she can’t bear to put it words. For some reason, Flynn isn’t outing Lucy to her fellow time-travelers — which tells us it’s probably something she did to help him… And we’d be shocked to learn that Lucy’s half-remembered rescue from drowning was thanks to none other than Garcia Flynn.

Will Lucy one day go against everything she believes in as a historian, and do something she knows will rewrite history? Will discovering the truth about Flynn and her father help her realize the future might be improved by changing history — and if so, will that be her turning point? Where does she draw the line, especially if the road begins with saving her family? Wyatt’s wife? Bigger changes yet?

We’ve been fans of the show from the start, but these intricate, carefully planned and executed wheels-within-wheels, even if they are the nature of time travel stories, have pulled us in completely — we’re starting to wish we had a time machine ourselves!

“Timeless” airs on Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
