Set to premiere next week at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, Atomic Blonde is already one of our most anticipated titles. Charlize Theron stars as a British secret agent; her mission is to recover a stolen list of other secret agents.
If that sounds vaguely similar to the first Mission: Impossible movie, the first two teasers, ahead of the trailer debut, should reassure that the new thriller will have a very different look and feel than that — or any other — spy movie.
Even in those brief few moments, the action is, shall we say, more snappy than the usual spy thriller and that’s no doubt a credit to director David Leitch, who previously codirected John Wick and is now in pre-production on Deadpool 2. Leitch’s credits as as a second unit director or assistant director include Captain America: Civil War, Jurassic World and The Wolverine. Obviously, he knows a thing or two about action, since he’s also a veteran stunt man.
Now the first (restricted) trailer has been released and it’s a stunner. Watch it below.
The movie is based on The Coldest City, a highly-praised graphic novel written by Antony Johnston and illustrated by Sam Hart. It was set in November 1989, shortly before the Berlin Wall was torn down, so the location and time period certainly provides a bubbling cauldron as a background for the action to unfold. Kurt Johnston, whose credits include 300 and Act of Valor, wrote the screenplay.
James McAvoy, John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones also star. Atomic Blonde will open in theaters on July 28.
