Daughter of famed director Stanley Kubrick, Vivian, shot 18 hours of behind-the-scenes footage for a documentary on the making of Full Metal Jacket. She never completed the project, but the footage has appeared in numerous Kubrick collections, including Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, directed by Kubrick collaborator and brother-in-law, Jan Harlan.

A faithful Kubrick fan edited the footage together and stuck it on YouTube for our viewing pleasure. The filmmaker’s serious, obsessive reputation precedes him, but we actually get a peek at a laughing, smiling Kubrick who, yes, dominates the set with his perfectionism, but also shows a tenderness and humor toward his crew.

Watch Kubrick lecture someone about tea time, get neurotic, offer advice to actor Matthew Modine, and instruct a group of actors on the proper way to grab their crotches during the movie’s “this is my rifle, this is my gun” scene.
