One of the great things about the upcoming 50/50 is how it brilliantly blends comedy and drama to the point where you’re laughing one minute and crying the next. Achieving the right tone with a dramedy is so difficult, and in my opinion it’s the reason why so many festival films don’t succeed with audiences. When you try to balance comedy and drama, you have to do it right or else the audience won’t know how to feel or how to react to the problems your main characters face. 50/50 gets it right, and that may be because writer Will Reiser lived the story, and also because co-star Seth Rogen essentially plays himself.

Based on Reiser’s real-life struggles with being diagnosed with cancer at 24, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (playing Reiser) as a young, somewhat hip guy who must come to terms with the fact that he may die soon. Helping lift his spirits is his best friend Kyle, played by Seth Rogen, who was Reiser’s real-life best friend at the time.

Watch Gordon-Levitt, Rogen and Reiser talk about the real-life story behind the movie below, then stick around because Gordon-Levitt throws out an assignment for folks to upload their own tragic life stories, told with a humorous slant. Eventually Gordon-Levitt and his team at HITRECORD will assemble all the stories into a short film that we’ll definitely post once it’s available. Check out the video below, and upload your videos over here.
