If you’re one of those seldom social networkers that happened to miss the big music video premiere that had The Watercooler buzzing or found yourself drawing a blank at the mention of the name “Antoine Dodson,” YouTube’s got you covered.
The popular video sharing website is rolling out a special retrospective channel called Rewind to highlight some of the most memorable performances and biggest stars of the past year as the Home of Vlogging unveils its list of the Most-Watched Videos of 2010.
Users around the world pressed the play button on “Auto-Tune the News” and a host of viral gems starring Justin Bieber millions of times, YouTube bosses say.
To the delight of Beliebers everywhere, Grammy-nominated pop sensation Bieber can lay claim to the most-watched music video of all time. The promo for his breakout hit “Baby” has been viewed over 400 million views. Lady Gaga can thank her Little Monsters for making her the Most-Watched Artist in YouTube’s five-year history. The zany “PokerFace” hitmaker boasts about 1 billion views to her name.
Other heavily-trafficked vids on YouTube in 2010 included Greyson Chance’s cover of Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” The 13-year-old came to the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, who signed him to a recording contract, thanks to his church talent show performance vidoe, which has racked up over 33 million views. Another highly watched clip came from Key of Awesome, a comedy troupe that parodied Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok.”
Mia Quagliarello, YouTube Community Manager, noted that several of 2010′s top videos were made by people or companies that attempt to create YouTube videos for a living. The site shares advertising revenue with vloggers, who they call “partners.”
“More and more people are seeing YouTube as a place they can make it their career,” said Quagliarello. “We try to give them the tools and the financials to make that happen.”
(Drumroll Please….) Hide Yo’ Kids, Hide Yo’ Wife….Antoine Dodson is the star of YouTube’s Most-Watched Video of the Year! The year’s most watched clip featured the Alabama man, whose rant over his sister’s near sexual assult picked up 61 million views. The so-called “Bed Intruder” video was remixed by New York musicians Evan and Michael Gregory who are also known for their Web series “Auto-Tune the News.” The song charted on iTunes, with profits being split between Dodson and the Gregorys. Antoine made enough dough to move his entire family out of the projects, enroll in college, and invest in a good lacefront wig!
