‘Bones’ exonerates Zack … on more than one count of murder

If you, like us, jumped the gun and believed Dr. Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) was truly guilty of The Puppeteer’s crimes on “Bones,” you’re in good company.

Pretty much everyone at the Jeffersonian believed Zack had turned into a demented serial killer, even reaching so far as to assume he’d developed dissociative identity disorder — commonly known as multiple personality disorder — to commit these awful murders. They even had Zack believing his so-called evil twin was guilty.

Luckily, with the help of industrious Dr. Karen Delfs (Sara Rue), the team eventually realized Zack was not the true criminal, but rather his own psychiatrist. In a harrowing final confrontation, Dr. Roshan (Ravi Kapoor) nearly killed Zack via lethal injection. In the scuffle, Zack realized something important about himself: He’s incapable of killing anyone, even to save his own life.

So does this mean he’s innocent of killing that lobbyist all those years ago?

According to Zack, he had no memory of committing the crime, but believed himself so manipulated by the Gormogon that he confessed to the crime anyway. Now, he’s more sure than ever that he couldn’t have killed him.

We’re less than sure about his newfound innocence.

It’s hard not to be touched by Zack’s attempts to help Hodgins (T.J Thyne) walk again, and his protectiveness over Brennan (Emily Deschanel). However, just because he’s able to feel a fondness for certain people doesn’t mean he isn’t still a bad guy. Like Aubrey (John Boyd) said, even Norman Bates was probably nice to his mother. Being a killer doesn’t mean you can’t have a soft spot for people you don’t intend to brutally murder. It’s going to take more evidence than a lack of fight or flight instinct to convince us that Zack is truly innocent.

Luckily for us, he’ll be sticking around for a couple more episodes during the final season of “Bones,” meaning we’ll likely either see Zack exonerated for his crimes, or get concrete evidence he actually committed them. Whatever the case, we’re looking forward to some closure for this fan-favorite character.
