A ‘Sleepy Hollow’ Season 4 request: Please don’t ship Alex and Jake!

Romance has never been the strongest of story drivers on “Sleepy Hollow.” While the show briefly explored the relationship between Jenny Mills (Lyndie Greenwood) and Joe Corbin (Zach Appelman) in Season 3, there’s been a refreshing lack of courtship in the show’s current run… Until Friday’s (March 10) episode.

Don’t get us wrong: Sparks weren’t exactly flying between Jake (Jerry MacKinnon) and Rachel (Alex Norwood)… At least, not yet. But the pangs of jealousy that washed over Rachel gave us major pause. Maybe it’s a passing crush that won’t end up leading Rachel and Jake to Romanceville — but we can’t ignore this growing trend: Before meeting Jake’s newest girlfriend, Rachel shot down his goofy attempts at hooking up with Jenny Mills. But as she comes to her own understanding that there may be something there, noting some of Jake’s “charming” qualities, it seems we could be heading somewhere distracting at best, and sappy — or melodramatic — at worst.

Over the past four seasons, the show has made strong partnerships a priority: Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Crane (Tom Mison) set the standard — leaving any sort of romance firmly at the door (or in their case, back in the Revolution). That detail helped to elevate the series, putting the two on an even, respectful level where the issue of sexual intimacy never became a part of the equation.

Sure, a love interest angle could present some interesting story possibilities… But it can also diminish the overall integrity of the show’s legacy. And if Ichabod and Diana (Janina Gavankar) can keep things platonic, the same should go for the rest of Team Witness.

So where does that leave things exactly? Will the coming episodes find Rachel and Jake growing in an intimate manner? With Malcolm’s (Jeremy Davies) mission of bringing The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse moving forward, something tells us an end-of-the-world scenario is just the convenient catalyst the tech-savvy duo needs to run straight into each other’s arms.

“Sleepy Hollow” airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
