‘AHS: Roanoke’s’ biggest shock wasn’t a gory murder, but a secret revealed

Another episode of “American Horror Story” down, and the Blood Moon has acquired more victims.

In Wednesday’s (Nov. 2) episode, the proverbial herd has gotten thinner and we’re left asking ourselves: Who actually deserves to survive Season 6? Our original notion was that of everyone in the house — those still alive, anyway — Lee (Adina Porter) was the only one who should make it out in one piece. And then … she lost a few pieces.

One of the main conflicts presented in the first half of “Roanoke” was Lee’s relationship with her estranged husband. And when he went missing, all eyes pointed to her as the culprit in his gruesome murder.  Between Shelby’s (Lily Rabe) violent head-bashing murder of Matt (Andre Holland) and subsequent suicide, it’s pretty clear that the Blood Moon can drive people to things that might normally be considered outside their character.

Which leads us back to Lee. Up until “Chapter 8,” she was the perfect candidate to be “Roanoke’s” Final Girl. But then something awful happened. No, we’re not referring to her missing ear — which will end up pickled for a lovely Christmas present — or the missing flesh from her arm and leg. Instead, it was when she requested to speak with her daughter Flora … and dropped a bombshell that had us reeling.

Accepting her doom, as it were, Lee ends up admitting to Jether Polk’s (Finn Wittrock) camera that she killed her ex-husband Mason (Charles Malik Whitfield) after all.

That’s right: It wasn’t the Butcher (Kathy Bates) and her ghostly gang of Colonial followers who strung him up and burned him alive. That was all Lee. Way to go, “American Horror Story.” You straight up shocked us!

For a show that is all about appearances, creating and obscuring horrors, and telling fantasies from reality, nobody could have expected the lie at the center of it all. And now that Lee has shown her true colors, we really have no clear options on who will — or should — make it out of this mess alive.

… ah, who are we kidding? It’s totally going to be Audrey. We all know how much Ryan Murphy loves that Sarah Paulson!

“American Horror Story: Roanoke” airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
