Are we rooting for the wrong heroes on ‘Timeless’?

The one thing NBC’s “Timeless” solidified very quickly was that Garcia Flynn (Goran Fisnjic) is a bad guy and needs to be taken out. But… what if that’s not actually the case? At one point in the pilot episode, Flynn presents Lucy (Abigail Spencer) with her journal… a book she has yet to write a single word in. It was in that moment that he tried to enlighten her on the true nature of his mission. Is it possible Flynn isn’t out to destroy the world, but save it?

That might be a hard pill to swallow, but in Monday’s (Oct. 17) episode, titled “Atomic City,” things transpired that gives us serious doubts about Flynn. Is it possible he’s not the evil mastermind Agent Christopher (Sakina Jaffrey) insists he is?

It’s in this episode that we get a little piece of the bigger picture. When Connor (Paterson Joseph) presented the notion to Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) that Anthony (Matt Frewer) was in on the heist — the one that took the mothership out of the government’s hands — we thought that idea was laughable. That is, until Rufus ran into Anthony in the 1962 version of Las Vegas. Originally coming off as if he was Flynn’s prisoner, those suspicions that the heist was an inside job is now looking more like reality. But, why? We have an idea.

What if, the reality in “Timeless” is the darkest timeline?

Think about it for a second. There are two time machines for a reason, and to truly get the technology up to speed, tests had to have occurred. Was Anthony involved in a trip back (or forth) in time that altered things a bit too far? Could Flynn’s trip through time be the fix they need to set things right? Could Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus be on a manhunt for all the wrong reasons?

Given that primetime television is all about the big reveals nowadays, the concept is sounding less far-fetched the more we think about it.

Plus, we haven’t been given too much insight into Flynn’s character. He’s obviously not a people person — he really likes shooting and punching heroes — but, at the end of the day, what if the mission he’s following requires the mindset of a cold blooded killer? A strong will may be what is necessary to restore America’s historical timeline to its original state. Casualties can happen, but if the end goal is to restore a different history entirely, would those deaths even matter?

We have so many questions and feel like we’re onto something here. And yet, now that Flynn has the active core of an atomic bomb, we really don’t know what to think.

“Timeless” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
