Basically, ’24: Legacy’ is one very elaborate trust fall

After watching Monday’s (Feb. 27) episode of “24: Legacy” — titled, “4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. — we’ve come to the harsh realization that Eric Carter (Corey Hawkins) is running out of people he can trust. And when you think about it, that question of trust is a throughline for the majority of the characters’ plotlines.

Loyalty is one thing, but Carter’s knack for sticking by his Army Ranger buddy, Ben Grimes (Charlie Hofheimer) — no matter how many times the man seems to mess up — can be a little frustrating. There’s a moment in the episode where arms dealer — and unofficial James Bond villain — Gabriel (Andrew Howard) hands Carter a gun to put his friend out of his misery. Not for nothing, but if this were Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), he wouldn’t have even hesitated. Unfortunately for Ben, Gabriel’s henchmen did the dirty work anyway.

Now that Ben’s dead, we can easily count on one hand the people Eric can trust: Faithful wife Nicole (Anna Diop), former CTU director Rebecca (Miranda Otto) and drug-lord brother, Isaac (Ashley Thomas).

Yet, after watching the interaction between Isaac and Nicole, we are now of the firm belief there is no romance in the cards. Causing physical harm to Carter’s wife will probably come back to bite Isaac — we’re just wondering if Eric will be the one doing the biting.

And speaking of Isaac: Even though Nicole tipped him off to the pending coup among his own people, a lack of trust is quickly growing in his compound. If Aisha (Tiffany Hines) and Jerome (Hajji Golightly) can betray him, what’s to say everyone else isn’t against him, as well? It’s that sort of paranoia that can send a man off the deep end, leading us to wonder if this might be the beginning of Isaac’s downward spiral. If so, Nicole better watch out — as he may drag her down with him.

Finally, John Donovan (Jimmy Smits) has found himself in quite a frustrating pickle. After his father Henry (Gerald McRainey) was revealed as the leak that led to the death of Eric’s Army Ranger squad — potentially putting thousands of Americans in danger — it seemed pretty cut-and-dried that the threat was handled. Yet, during Rebecca’s attempt at interrogating her father-in-law — awkward! — the man denied the whole entire thing! This family is going to need a boatload of therapy to put this whole thing behind them.

So where do we go from here?

With Ben Grimes and Gabriel dead, the only lead Eric has is the intel recovered on the arms dealer’s laptop. Where that will lead is anyone’s guess. And while Eric continues on his world-saving mission, the chemistry between Isaac and Nicole feels completely broken, now. She’s proven herself to be quite smart, resilient and quick on her feet — which makes us now believe she will not end up in Isaac’s arms when all is said and done.

With the Donovan family drama brewing — and the sleeper cells finally receiving their activation codes — something tells us all the danger is about to hit all the fans.

“24: Legacy” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
