A group of rock ‘n roll pioneers are the subjects of an upcoming motion picture musical — sprinkled with a splash of Mamma Mia!
Music legends the Beach Boys will be getting the big screen treatment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Fox 2000 edged out Universal for the rights to the catalogue of the successful band, who helped serve as the fabric of the feel good rock music of the ’60s. Rather than a biopic, the still-untitled Beach Boys movie musical will center around a storyline inspired by and featuring some of the signature singles recorded by the “California Girls” crooners — similar to that of the 2008 smash Mamma Mia!, which used ABBA’s music as the inspiration for an original story.
The untitled project is being reportedly co-produced by actor John Stamos, who has performed with The Beach Boys and was featured group’s video for their No. 1 1988 hit song “Kokomo.”
Hairspray and Annie producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will reportedly produce the project, while Susannah Grant has been courted to pen the script the film.
A release date has not yet been set.
