A real treat for “Blacklist” fans drops Tuesday (Aug. 2) in the form of the Season 3 DVD/Blu-ray, which includes commentary for one of the series’ finest episodes and also a special look at everyone’s favorite tech guy, Aram (Amir Arison).

Season 3 was a bit more serialized than the previous two seasons, which Bokenkamp says was just the nature of the storyline with Liz (Megan Boone) and Red (James Spader).

“The story of her being on the run and trying to clear her name and stepping into Red’s world sort of pushed in that direction, where it felt almost so urgent at times it would be silly to go off and just do some random case,” Bokenkamp tells Zap2it. “They were in such great jeopardy that at times serialization became more important, but truly that was really fun … [and] there was still a Blacklister for every episode except our ‘Cape May’ episode.”

Speaking of “Cape May,” Zap2it mentions that that was basically James Spader’s Emmy reel and Bokenkamp agrees and says fans can look forward to “Cape May” commentary on the DVD/Blu-ray set.

“That was a fun episode, it was a total departure and something I feel was really unique and special in that it led us into Red’s world in a way we haven’t done before,” says Bokenkamp. “After Liz died, it was like, ‘How do we tell a case of the week? How do we not just sit with Red for a whole episode and see how he mourns and what he’s going through and what ghosts he’s haunted by?’ It was a little risky, but I think it was a real success.”

In addition to episode commentary, Bokenkamp says there are a few fun featurettes for the fans.

“Sony is super cool about doing unique and fun things. There’s a number of things we have in the DVD set — there’s a featurette about the making of the comic book; we have a piece about Aram and who he is and how he’s written and how Amir brings that character to life; there’s a piece on stunts on the show and it’s really cool to see how they do it, how we pull off each week these really cool stunts. There are a lot of great bonus features and it’s fun to watch them come together.”

“The Blacklist” returns Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and the DVD/Blu-ray set is available now.
