The Harry Potter brand is back and off to a decent start with the release of the prequel spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. J.K. Rowling, creator of the franchise and screenwriter of the latest movie, claims there will be four more installments of this series, which follows magizoologist Newt Scamander and his suitcase filled with strange creatures. To prepare you for what’s coming next, here’s everything we know so far about the first Fantastic Beasts sequel:
Who all is returning for the next movie?
Eddie Redmayne will of course be back as Newt, but will any of his new friends from New York be returning? Producer David Heyman claims, via The Hollywood Reporter, we will see more of Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol) and Kowalski (Dan Fogler). We can presume (and hope) the popular comic-relief beast the Niffler will also make an appearance.
Additionally, two characters who only have cameos in the first movie are going to appear more prominently. One is Gellert Grindelwald, whom we saw played by Johnny Depp for a moment at the end, and another is Leta Lestrange, who is played by Zoe Kravitz and seen only in a photo inside Scamander’s case.
What about behind the camera?
Rowling wrote the screenplay for the sequel, which will again be directed by David Yates. This will be his sixth movie in the franchise.
Will we see any characters from the Harry Potter series this time around?
Yes, a young(er) Albus Dumbledore is going to appear in the sequel, and we know it won’t be Michael Gambon reprising the role with de-aging effects. Many fans are hoping for the casting of Jared Harris, son of Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter adaptations before his untimely death.
Where will we find the beasts in their next adventure?
While the first movie is set in New York City, the sequel will be transporting the series to Paris with part taking place in the UK (Watford, England, to be exact). The time will also be very different, so we move forward from the winter of 1926 to the spring and summer of 1928.
Do we know anything else about the story?
Aside from Grindelwald having a more prominent role as himself as the movie’s villain, the only other thing we know plot-wise is that Newt will be reunited with Leta, whom he is still in love with. According to Yates, via Cinema Blend, “she has a kind of power over him, and she, yeah, she’s a kind of tragic figure.”
Presumably, there is going to be a kind of love triangle involved, especially if Waterston is back as Tina. Although we never really see her and Newt have a romantic connection, there is hint of one brewing. Plus, not to spoil it for the non-readers, Tina is named as Newt’s wife in the “about the author” section of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book that inspired the movies.
When can we see it?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 (as it’s tentatively titled) is set to open on November 16, 2018.
