“Wayward Pines” ended its second season in such a way that left the door open for a possible Season 3 in 2017, which executive producer and book series author Blake Crouch told Zap2it is something they have definitely mapped out.

In speaking to a small group of reporters at the 2016 summer TCA press tour, Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden echoes those sentiments and says she loves the Season 3 idea the producers pitched.

“They have a really compelling idea for Season 3 that I liked very much. We’re definitely talking about the show right now,” says Walden. “I definitely think there could be a Season 3.”

She adds that the network expects to make a renewal decision soon, but they’re waiting to see the “delayed-viewing platform results” in order to get a better picture of how big the whole audience is. She also tells Zap2it that she anticipates the return of some of the Season 2 characters, so with that in mind, here are the three must-haves if “Wayward Pines” returns.

1. Dr. Yedlin

Matt Dillon was a fine lead in Season 1 when the audience was learning alongside his character what exactly was going on in Wayward Pines. But Dr. Yedlin (Jason Patric) was an even more compelling lead, bringing a no-nonsense strength to the town that provided a great foil to dictator Jason Higgins (Tom Stevens).

2. CJ Mitchum

The best episode of “Wayward Pines” entire series was definitely “Time Will Tell,” the look back into CJ’s (Djimon Hounsou) journey as the one Wayward Pines resident who watched the world implode. Now that he has joined the world of “Wayward Pines,” it would be a huge shame if he were not a part a Season 3 because he brought a gravitas to the role and hit emotional beats that the show sometimes lacks.

3. Adam Hassler

The return of Tim Griffin’s Adam Hassler was an interesting peek into life outside the Wayward Pines fence. He ultimately decided he couldn’t stay in the town, especially after Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon) died, but when he left, his fate was left open-ended. It would be interesting to see what happened to him within the Abbies’ world and perhaps bring him back into the town as either a friend … or a foe.
