Well, the “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” trailer certainly has our attention.
Coming on the heels of author Tom Clancy’s death, the latest glimpse of Chris Pine as the late novelist’s most celebrated character, Jack Ryan, serves up an action-packed dose of intrigue in the form of assassination attempts, complicated geopolitics, and a financial terrorist plot.
Here’s the official synopsis, from Paramount:
The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that’s more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).
Unlike past Jack Ryan movies (“The Hunt for Red October,” “The Sum of All Fears,” “Clear and Present Danger,” “Patriot Games”), “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” isn’t based on a Tom Clancy novel; rather, it’s an original story based on the life of the character.
Pine is the fourth actor to embody Clancy’s always-endangered CIA analyst. Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck have all had a chance to play Ryan.
“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” which co-stars Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, and Kenneth Branagh (who also directs), hits theaters soon.
