James McAvoy Would Love to Do More 'X-Men' Movies; Calls 'Logan' Brilliant

The future of the main X-Men films is now up in the air, but the franchise as a whole received an injection of fresh, inventive spunk thanks to last year’s R-rated Deadpool, and that new wave of edgier, riskier Marvel material will continue with this year’s Logan. In that film, Patrick Stewart will once again reprise the role of Charles Xavier for a story set in the near future — one that seems to pick up Xavier’s journey at a time when he’s aged considerably and isn’t in the best shape, both physically and as it pertains to his powers.

But what about the younger Xavier, who we last saw duke it out with Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse in last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. He was portrayed pretty brilliantly by James McAvoy throughout three films, and as those central X-Men movies look to continue on, will McAvoy be a part of them?

When we sat down with the actor to talk about his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split (in theaters January 20), we asked McAvoy straight up if he’s still down for more X-Men movies.

Watch his reponse below.

“If they offer me a really good part, I’ll be in,” he said. “If it’s not a very good part, then… I’ll think about it. I love playing Charles, and I’ve always had interesting things to do with Charles, so if that continues then of course I’d love to take part in it.”

We also briefly asked him about Logan, which McAvoy teased, “It’s brilliant, it’s brilliant — I’m jealous I’m not old enough to play Charles like that yet, but I was like, what a great idea, what a brilliant idea!”

McAvoy may be playing coy, of course, as he is rumored to be reprising the role of Charles Xavier in a New Mutants movie. Also rumored for that film is his Split co-star Anya Taylor-Joy, who may have let slip to Coming Soon that McAvoy is definitely a part of the movie, saying, “I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”

Is he? We’ll see.

We’ll have much more with McAvoy on the complexities of his terrific performance in Split as we inch closer to its January 20 release.
