Jennifer Morrison talk ‘Once Upon a Time’ Season 7 possibilities

After six seasons on the air, the cast of “Once Upon a Time” seem to have come to the end of their original contracts for the show, which leaves this fairytale drama in a bit of a no-mans-land.

They hit 100 episodes in Season 5, which is typically a milestone for any show, and while fans are still passionately turning up for new episodes, the six year mark is usually when you see stars begin to fade away. “The Vampire Diaries” lost Nina Dobrev after is sixth season finale, and “Suits” recently lost Gina Torres when her contract expired in the middle of their sixth season.

“Once Upon a Time’s” lead actress, Jennifer Morrison, recently spoke to the issue while visiting The Drop-In with Will Malnati.

“My contract ends in April on ‘Once Upon a Time.’ I don’t know what that means. They haven’t picked up the show officially yet. They might, they might not,” Morrison says. “So we’re just kind of waiting now to see if the network decides to continue with the show and if they do continue with the show if they are going to rework it to be something else or if they’re going to invite people to stay. So we’re kind of in a holding pattern right now. It’s really complicated.”

It’s not unusual for a show to soldier on without one or two of its original characters, but we’re not sure what a reimagining of the show would look like without Emma Swan. She’s been such an integral ingredient in the show’s success — not to mention the central figure in every storyline — that it’s almost impossible to imagine Storybrooke without her.

We’re faced with the terrifying possibility that the show could kill her off, however, if it wanted or needed to.

In Season 6, Emma has been slowly dwindling down the time until her vision of the future comes about. That vision shows her being run through (and presumably killed), and she’s been told there’s no way of avoiding it. For the time being, it seems like “Once Upon a Time” might kill off its lead in order to move the series forward and change things up.

Morrison isn’t headed for the door yet though, since it seems like things are still very up in the air.

“I have a really fierce loyalty to the show in a certain way,” she says. “I’m fiercely protective of the character, and I feel like so many amazing things have come to my life because of it. It’s really made my life better in so many ways, and I don’t have any interest in abandoning something that is such a special part of my life.”

While she might not have it in her to stay on the show forever, it sounds like she currently has no plans to leave if ABC decides to invite her back for a Season 7.

Rest easy, Oncers. Storybrooke’s savior is safe for the time being.

“Once Upon a Time” returns March tktk, 2017 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
