Kiersey ('Dope') Clemons Confirmed to Star in 'The Flash'

Kiersey Clemons

Earlier this month, we heard that Kiersey Clemons was the top choice for the female lead in The Flash. Ezra Miller has already been glimpsed as the speedy superhero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will have a more prominent role in Justice League, as indicated by the first trailer.

Now the casting of Clemons has been confirmed by Variety. The trade publication says that her deal has been closed and it is “likely” that she will be playing Iris West, a journalist and friend of Barry Allen, also known as the Flash. The report also indicates that the latest draft of a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will be used.

Who is Kiersey Clemons?

Her breakout role was a supporting turn in Dope (above center), in which she played a close friend of the lead character. Rick Famuyiwa directed Dope and will also be directing The Flash, so it’s no surprise that she got the chance to snare the lead role.

Beyond her working relationship with Famuyiwa, Clemons has worked steadily on a variety of television shows. Earlier this year, she made a great impression as one of Chloe Grace Moretz’s sorority sisters in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (below right), and has also nabbed a featured role in the upcoming Flatliners remake. Clearly, she can handle both comic and dramatic roles.

Who is Iris West?

In the trailer for Justice League, Barry Allen says he’s looking for friends, so perhaps it’s set before he becomes friends with Iris. The first time she shows up in the DC comics, she is a journalist and Barry’s fiancée, though she doesn’t know that he is also the Flash. The movie, of course, is in no way bound to the comic history of the relationship, so it should be interesting to see how things develop.

The movie is still aiming to begin production later this year. The Flash is scheduled to open in theaters on March 16, 2018.
