Marvel's 'Avengers: Infinity War' Will Be One Movie, Not Two

Captain America: Civil War

Marvel updated everyone about their plans for the Avengers back in 2014. In advance of the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, we learned that Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1 would be coming on May 4, 2018, to be followed by Avengers: Infinity War — Part 2 in May 2019. In early 2015, Anthony and Joe Russo were set to direct.

First, the Russo brothers needed to finish Captain America: Civil War (top), which launched earlier this year to great success. Even before that movie got out of the gate in May, news broke that two additional characters would be joining the fun, Thor and Star-Lord (from Guardians of the Galaxy). At the same time, we heard that Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War — Part 2 would be “very, very different from one another,” according to Anthony Russo. “It’s not a part one and part two scenario, necessarily,” Russo said. “They’re just two different expressions.”

To emphasize that, Marvel has changed the titles of the two movies, per Deadline. Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1 has been retitled, simply, Avengers: Infinity War, while the former Avengers: Infinity War — Part 2 will now be known as Untitled Avengers.

Guardians of the Galaxy

That’s only a temporary title, of course, but it reinforces the idea that the two movies are separate entities. It’s good to remember, too, that five Marvel installments — Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther — will continue to set up events over the next couple of years that will culminate in Avengers: Infinity War. The next Avengers movie is drawn from a 1991 comic book series featuring the team of superheroes battling the all-powerful Thanos (Josh Brolin, above in Guardians of the Galaxy) and his infinity gauntlet.

What about the one after that? It will come on the heels of Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel and will bring Marvel’s so-called Phase Three series of films to a conclusion, but we’ve had no hints about the possible storyline or how it might set up Marvel movies in the future.

Production on both movies will begin later this year. Avengers: Infinity War is due in theaters on May 4, 2018, and Untitled Avengers on May 3, 2019.
