Movie News: Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Her’ Voice Ineligible for Golden Globe; Quentin Tarantino’s Western; ‘Boxtrolls’ Trailer

Her: Scarlett Johansson gives an award-worthy performance as the kind, empathetic, loving voice of an operating system with artificial intelligence in Spike Jonze’s upcoming sci-fi movie Her, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has deemed her ineligible for any Golden Globe nominations. Johansson is not seen in the film, yet her presence is definitely felt. She is still eligible for Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild awards consideration; the movie opens on December 18. [EW.com]

Quentin Tarantino: Among its multiple genre elements, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained definitely had a Western theme underscoring the action, and the director wants to make another one. While guesting on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Tarantino reportedly said that his next script is almost finished, and that it’s a Western, which, based on past interviews, could be …  almost anything. Arnon Milchan: The producer of 12 Years A Slave, Fight Club, the upcoming Noah, and many more has acknowledged that he was an Israeli spy and arms dealer, even after he began working in Hollywood in the early 1980s. Arnon Milchan, whose early credits include Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, confirmed his past activities on an Israeli investigative TV show. Milchan said he risked his life many times for his country, and is proud of what he did. [Variety]

The Boxtrolls Trailer: Stop-motion animation takes a lot of time and hands-on craftsmanship, which is amply demonstrated in a delightful new trailer for The Boxtrolls, from the independent studio LAIKA (Coraline, ParaNorman). The movie follows the titular “monsters,” who prove to be much more kind-hearted and family-oriented than the local citizenry imagine. It’s heading to theaters on September 26, 2014.
