The Purge 4: The fourth installment of the Purge series is on its way. James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first three installments, including The Purge: Election Year (above), will write the screenplay but will not direct. Combined, the low-budget movies have earned more than $300 million at the box office worldwide. The next, not yet titled installment is set for release on Independence Day weekend in 2018. [Variety]
The Batman: Recently, we heard that Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, above) was in early talks to direct The Batman, a solo movie set to star Ben Affleck. But now comes word that negotiations have broken down, though the possibility remains that talks might resume “when heads cool.” In the meantime, Warner Bros. is still pressing ahead with plans for the movie. Shazam: David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, above) is in talks to direct Shazam. The project revolves around a character named Billy Batson, who can transform himself into a superhero with the powers of six mythological gods, all by saying “Shazam.” Sandberg’s Annabelle 2 is slated for theatrical release on August 11. Song to Song Trailer: Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara star in Song to Song. As explained in the first trailer, the drama is set in the music scene in Austin, Texas. Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman also star; Terrence Malick directed. The movie will open in theaters on March 17. [Movieclips]
