Nate & Oliver just moved to the top of our ‘HTGAWM’ suspects list

Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) has always been a suspect in Wes’ (Alfred Enoch) murder as far as we’re concerned, but Thursday’s (Feb. 9) episode of “How to Get Away with Murder” drove him and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) to the top of our suspects list.

Obviously we know Nate was in the house before it exploded, but now we know that he actually had contact with Wes in the house before he died. That — plus the fact that he didn’t disclose it and signed off on the body getting misplaced — is just too suspicious to dismiss.

On the other hand, Connor (Jack Falahee) has started to notice that Oliver is an incredibly talented liar when he wants to be. We’d never assumed someone as adorable and innocent as Oliver would ever have anything to do with this murder, but now… Well, we can’t rule anyone out. We spoke with Lahey about our concerns.

Does Nate actually believe Frank killed Wes?

“In detective speak, everybody’s a suspect. Could [Frank] have done it? Sure he could have done it — but that’s why Nate was one of the best detectives on the force. He’s not going to arrive at any abrupt conclusions until the evidence supports it. Right now, Nate’s looking at all these motherf***ers.”

What does Nate think about Wes’ body now being ‘lost,’ on top of the changed autopsy report?

“He felt it on that first visit to the M.E., he felt something wasn’t right. He is one of the lucky ones that has learned to trust his instincts, and that’s what he’s going with. That emboldens him and continues to strengthen his force of will. He will move on a trajectory that best serves him, and anyone who stands in his way, so be it. Those that want to get on board? They’re more than welcome.”

What about the fact that Nate’s name is on the body transfer order?

“What about that? What? Did he?! What happened there? Look at that, it’s crazy… Yeah, he’s in a sh**load of trouble. Whoever has done that, they have put him in such a corner, potentially. The repercussions could be felt through his loins and to his offspring [Laughs]. He realizes one thing — that whoever did this, it was rushed, it was amateurish, and this is not going to be the biggest hurdle that I have to get around.”

Now knowing Nate was in the house with Wes, he looks pretty guilty, right?

“Yeah, when I read it — knowing that we exist in a low oxygen, high altitude climate of treachery — I said to myself, Okay, let’s see where this goes. It’s exciting. I didn’t see it coming. I don’t read the scripts before the table reads, so I get to experience all the words for the first time with my cast, bringing them to life off the page… This is good, because it puts Nate exactly — for people who haven’t suspected him, possibly — at the heart of Wes’ murder.

“It’s a fun moment to have for us, for Alfred Enoch and myself to play, and that will unfold. There will be much more that you’ll be able to relish, as the layers are peeled off, of all that went on in the house. That’s a great moment to have, both as an actor and an audience member.”

The line that stands out from this episode is when Connor realizes Oliver is a good liar. Do you have any theories or tidbits to share about Oliver’s possible connection to Wes’ murder?

“All I can say is that all hackers are scallywags and closet liars… I wasn’t so surprised at that because here’s a guy who’s tech savvy and has used his, if you will, binary gifts, coding gifts, to tickle the underbelly of the dark side. If he’s capable of doing that, then what else might be on the tips of Oliver’s fingers?”

“How to Get Away with Murder” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
