Paul Wesley & Ian Somerhalder tell us their favorite ‘TVD’ episode of all time

Over the course of eight seasons, “The Vampire Diaries” has had quite a few standout episodes.

The pilot sucked us all in with Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) instant connection, the Season 3 finale blended Originals craziness with Elena’s final human moments, and even Season 7 pulled out a showstopper in Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) hell dimension bottle episode. Ask any fan, and they’ll tell you they don’t have a favorite episode of “The Vampire Diaries” — they have 10.

Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, however, have managed to select one episode, and it’s not a huge finale or season opener like we expected. When asked to pick one of their favorite moments of the series, Wesley and Somerhalder both immediately pointed to the fifth episode of Season 1.

“I think that’s when we were like, ‘This sh** is pretty good,'” Wesley says. “It was this episode called ‘Lost Girls.'”

“It was my favorite episode ever,” Somerhalder adds. “My business manager was in town, and he’s like a big brother of mine, and we were sitting in Paul’s gorgeous apartment in Atlanta, and then the episode ended, and I saw him — this guy Michael — and he just said, ‘Wow,’ and he looked over at us and he goes, ‘This is going to go, guys. This is going to be here for a while. You should probably dig your heels in.'”

In case you’re rusty on your instant recall, “Lost Girls” was the first episode in the series to give us flashback to Stefan and Damon’s human courtship with Katherine in 1864. It told the tale of their first meeting, their brotherly love — a new dynamic, since Damon and Stefan were constantly at odds in the early episodes — and it also held the reveal that Katherine was, in fact, a vampire long before Stefan and Damon were.

“Go back and watch ‘Lost Girls,'” Somerhalder says. “It’s a really phenomenally crafted episode of television. It might be a teen vampire soap opera, but dam*** it’s a great piece of television … That one was special.”

In terms of pacing, acting, and just plain entertainment, we have to agree with the boys on this one: “Lost Girls” is one of the best episodes of the show to date, and it was the point in Season 1 when “The Vampire Diaries” really hit its stride. You could tell that Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson had struck gold with this story and with a stellar cast, so it’s no surprise that we’re all still talking about it eight years later.

“The Vampire Diaries” series retrospective airs Friday (March 10) at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by the series finale at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
