‘People of Earth’s’ Gerry seeks alien enlightenment, finds family instead

Since day one, “People of Earth’s” alien abductee support group “StarCrossed” has had one consistent outlier: Gerry (Luka Jones). And while the man helped create the group with Gina (Ana Gasteyer), he has carried with him the one embarrassing fact that — while he’s a self-proclaimed “alientologist” — he has never met a Grey or a Reptilian.

Monday’s (Dec. 5) episode, titled “Last Day on Earth,” found the bearded man-boy out to change that. In his attempt to permanently say goodbye to Ozzie (Wyatt Cenac), Gerry explains how he has calculated down to a two-hour window just when and where the aliens would visit to take their next Beacon resident. He’s made it his mission to be that lucky abductee.

Before he could do that, though, he had one big step he had to make: To tell Yvonne (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) how he feels.

There’s no denying the spark between the two support group members and, upon visiting Yvonne’s house, he quickly learns his admission of admiration was just a stepping stone to the beginnings of a potential romantic relationship. And from what we’ve gathered so far, Gerry is a stranger to such things.

He never does get taken up in any alien spaceship… And really, that sucks. But one thing that’s become very clear is this — without the group, Gerry may not have found this odd circle of friends. It’s a notion that becomes quite clear when we witness him packing for his trip. The essentials make it into his suitcase along with one very specific family photo — the StarCrossed gang.

We’ve never really seen what Gerry’s home-life is like, and maybe we never will. But between his new friendship with Ozzie, his budding relationship with Yvonne and his familial bond with the rest of the group, it’s possible he’s never been abducted because he just doesn’t qualify?

Is it possible the aliens only abduct those who come from fractured relationships — romantic or otherwise?

It would maybe explain the flashbacks featuring young Ozzie and Jonathan Walsh (Michael Cassidy). Kelly’s (Alice Wetterlund) lack of dating luck, Richard’s (Brian Huskey) failed marriage and the monotony of Chelsea’s (Tracee Chimo) home life all seem to fall into a similar pattern: People struggling to maintain a healthy connection with the significant others in their lives.

We’ve not fully been given the details behind the alien’s overall mission, but the bigger picture is just on the horizon. And with Ozzie’s investigation into Glint Enterprises leading him to Nancy Pelosi’s office — and Jonathan Walsh finding his own sense of conscience — it looks like the humdrum town of Beacon is about to face a very complex invasion.

But will it go according to plan? After witnessing Kelly and Don the White’s (Björn Gustafsson) awkward, yet endearing, first date, something tells us the answer is a resounding no.
