‘Pretty in Pink’ Alternate Ending: Jon Cryer on What John Hughes Originally Had in Mind

Way back in 2008, Diablo Cody, Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Juno,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Young Adult,” programmed a two-week run at Los Angeles’ New Beverly Cinema. As part of her line-up, she screened John Hughes’s immortal “Pretty in Pink” (Hughes stand-in Howard Deutsch actually directed it) and invited Jon Cryer, who played affable nerd “Duckie” in the film, along for a Q&A. It was during this discussion where Cryer recounted the original ending of the movie, which they shot but ended up not using.

“Molly Ringwald felt that if Robert Downey, Jr., the guy that she liked, had been cast, she would have been okay with the original ending,” Cryer tantalizingly began, referring to the almost casting of RDJ as Duckie. “She was young! She didn’t know!”

When Cody then asked if Ringwald had creative control, Cryer answers, “Well, yes and no. Partially because John Hughes was so attentive to the actors and wanted their input… But we actually shot the original ending.” He then asks the audience if they want him to “walk them through” the one they filmed, which he does. We won’t ruin it for you here (you can watch it in the video above), but it sounds really wonderful, and you can tell that the audience was digging it, too.
