Reel TV: Netflix's 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events' Looks …

It’s a bit strange to think about it, but back in 2004 Nickelodeon spent a ton of money making a big-screen adaptation of the beloved children’s book franchise A Series of Unfortunate Events. It starred Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, a bitter and mysterious old man who becomes the guardian of three young children after their parents die in a fire — and while audiences generally liked the film, it wasn’t a major hit considering its surprising $140 million budget. But even though the film was warmly met, many could agree on one thing: it just wasn’t quite like the books.

If you happened to be one of those fans, then brace yourself for the trailer for Netflix’s new show version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. And even though this thing is going straight to streaming, don’t think Netflix is pinching pennies here. The production design here looks every bit as elaborate and lush as the big budget version, if not moreso in parts. And this time it stars Neil Patrick Harris as Olaf, which is pretty much as perfect casting as you can get.

Check it out.
