‘Salem’s’ Sentinel enjoys some quality time in the sun

With the “Salem” series finale right around the corner, things in town have been getting a lot kookier. Last week, we said goodbye to Satan (Oliver Bell), as young John was pulled limb from bloody limb, while the Essex witches voluntarily met their collective demise. With the Dark Lord out of the way, it looks as if the Sentinel (Samuel Roukin) is now the main obstacle between the citizens of Salem and the pending day of doom known as Black Sunday.

Wednesday’s (Jan. 11) episode, titled “Friday’s Knights,” finds The Sentinel left to his own devices — or shall we say, vices?

His brother’s main focus may have been to simply bring Hell to Earth (while also marrying his birth mother), but that’s nothing compared to the new life the Sentinel’s exploring now. Leave it to Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel), of all people, to bring this big baddie out of his shell. Finally, his addictive personality and lewd misgivings have him walking a righteous path!

Getting the Sentinel out of the mansion was the first step in the plan devised by this new team of adversaries: Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery), John Alden (Shane West), Mather, Isaac Walton (Iddo Goldberg) and Baron Marburg (Joe Doyle). Once out in the streets, Mather taught his new pal the wonderful ways of humanity through generous portions of oranges, gin and women.

To be honest, seeing the Sentinel’s softer side was definitely something we could get used to. Under that thick skin — and all those morbidly evil intentions — is a wide-eyed young man, yearning to break free and live life to the fullest. At least he got a good taste of the human experience before meeting the end of John Alden’s specially crafted blade.

With the big man out of the way, it’s hard not to wonder what threat will rise up next. It’s obvious Tituba (Ashley Madekwe) has something planned for the Devil’s dismembered body.

But, what about Baron Marburg? His secret talks with his extremely dead mother — those big blue eyes aren’t creepy at all, you guys! — lead us to believe Countess Marburg (Lucy Lawless) may return before series’ end. The Baron’s heartbreak is sure to lead him down a very dark road… But how exactly will he lash out against Mary — aside from using her blood to resurrect the Countess?

And let’s not forget about the Dark Lord, himself. His vessel may be destroyed — but that hasn’t stopped the Devil from reaching out to those who will listen. There’s only the one ominous-looking door separating Hell from everything else, it seems, and something tells us Salem hasn’t seen the last of that devilish young boy.

All this may spell big trouble for everyone in town, but at least barber/surgeon Thomas Dinley (Marilyn Manson) has finally found his purpose. We’re sure that red mercury device will remain totally safe from any tampering under his watchful eye — totally.
