‘Suits’: Mike & Harvey find happiness on parallel paths … but will they ever con…

On Wednesday (Feb. 1), “Suits” finishes wrapping up the two huge open wounds still left from the first half of Season 6.

The first concern: Figuring out what Mike (Patrick J. Adams) is going to do once he’s out of prison. Sure, he’s getting ten cents on the dollar working at this legal clinic, and legally barred from personally defending anyone in court, but he’s in charge of guiding all the up and coming lawyers-to-be… And he’s great at it!

In the other main thread sewed up in “The Painting,” Donna (Sarah Rafferty) finally convinces Harvey (Gabriel Macht) to make things right with his mother (Brynn Thayer). After a seven year estrangement, and an emotionally tumultuous few days in Boston, Harvey accepts Lily’s apology.

Harvey also gets to have a very honest — and very overdue — conversation with his brother Marcus (Billy Miller). No, he didn’t call Harvey when his cancer returned — what good would Harvey’s presence serve if he can’t be in the same room with Bob without trying to beat him up? Mother Lily and Bob’s affair was wrong in every way. Harvey’s mother should’ve never asked him to lie to his father after walking in on her and Bob. She’s the first to admit that.

But it’s now been over 20 years: Bob’s her husband, a loving grandfather to Marcus’ kids, and a part of the family. Harvey doesn’t have to be best friends with Bob, but he has to accept that this man is a part of his life. What his mother did was awful, but she can’t spend her entire life apologizing — and more importantly, and he can’t spend the rest of his life being so angry. For a man whose entire career is based on always winning, it’s sad: Holding onto this grudge, it’s Harvey who’s losing.

Back in New York City, Mike personally pays out the defendant’s debt after his team loses in court. His charity not only keeps this struggling single mother from getting evicted, but buys his associates more time to figure out how to eventually win the case. It is wonderful to see Mike acclimate to a new firm as Harvey makes peace with his mother — but it feels all sorts of wrong that these stories are only running parallel to to each other! When’s the band getting back together? Right now, it feels like we’re watching the “Sliding Doors” version of  “Suits.” Something has to happen to reunite the Pearson Specter family… Right?

Harvey is now free from the deep-seated inner turmoil that caused his short temper and propensity to bury himself in work. He might actually be able to act as a managing partner now — and more importantly, he could finally be ready to commit to a real relationship. (Hey, Donna!) And since Mike has found work he feels can make the world a better place, it’s time for these two to kiss and make up. Mike and Harvey have been at each other’s throats before, but their bromance has never failed to rekindle.

While Specter Litt is still working out how it can get back on its feet without Jessica (Gina Torres), the main plot line of the next four episodes  remains in question. Producer Aaron Korsh usually lays out the groundwork for the following season as the finale nears, and there’s always some sort of emotional cliffhanger audiences are left to deal with in the interim. So a new crisis and/or perhaps a few new characters should start coming to light next week…

“Suits” airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on USA.
