The DC Extended Universe goes through some ups and downs regarding buzz on two of its most anticipated movies, while Wolverine has a miserable time in a delightful new clip in today’s superhero roundup:
Justice League Will Turn Things Around
If you’re tired of the dark quality of the DC Extended Universe, then you’ll be happy to hear that Justice League is going to be a new hope for the franchise. Actually, Damon Caro, stunt coordinator and second unit director for the movie (and Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), likens it to another part of the original Star Wars trilogy. From an interview at Heroic Hollywood:
Justice League was always the rebirth of hope and the rise. People try to say that it’s a response to the backlash, and I’d definitely say that criticisms were heard, but it’s not like we threw everything out and started with a blank slate. It’s a bit like Star Wars. Empire Strikes Back? Dark movie! But then Return of the Jedi is the rise and the rebuilding of hope.
Basically, he’s saying Man of Steel was A New Hope, Batman v Superman was always envisioned by Zack Snyder as the “darker movie” and now they’re going for more lighter fare. We’ll see just how different it is when the superhero team-up hits theaters on November 17.
Cyborg is a Mother Box
Another thing we’ll see this fall when Justice League arrives is a pivotal role for Cyborg, a member of the Justice League played by Ray Fisher. According to Total Film magazine (via ComicBookMovie.com), the character’s mechanical parts are made out of a “Mother Box,” which is a MacGuffin for the DCEU. There are likely three of them spread around the world, and they’ll be sought by the villain Steppenwolf in the upcoming movie. What this could mean for Cyborg’s future is daunting, especially given how much it seems to parallel the fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Vision, who is rumored to be a casualty in Avengers: Infinity War given that his existence is owed mostly to the Infinity Gem in his forehead.
The Batman Troubles Continue
Rumor has it that The Batman is about to lose more than its director. Following the shocking news that Ben Affleck will no longer helm the solo superhero effort, Forbes reports the script Affleck wrote with Geoff Johns that’s been reworked by Chris Terrio is getting thrown out completely. That draft, we also learn, featured multiple villains, including Jared Leto’s Joker, but it’s unclear if the main premise will be salvaged. Maybe Warner Bros. also wants something lighter with this DCEU installment? Whatever the case, there’s the presumption that The Batman will arrive with Affleck still starring sometime in 2019.
Logan Limo Clip
Finally, we’ve got something outside the DCEU with a new clip from Logan. The video below showcases a mini montage of Wolverine, aka Logan, aka James Howlett, as a limo driver who clearly can’t stand the job and his clientele, drinking and driving to ease his misery. Over the gritty black and white visuals we hear him calling about an ad for a Sunseeker, which is a kind of yacht. Where this fits in the movie is anyone’s guess, but we’ll find out when Logan arrives in theaters on March 3.
