Warner Bros. and DC Comics are not having an easy time with their attempt at expanding the Justice League franchise. The film’s themselves have actually been doing okay at the box office (Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman both put up big numbers), but they’ve been mired with less-than-stellar reviews from critics and fans alike. That’s caused the studio to reconsider every step of its production process, with one of the first side effects being the removal of Seth Grahame-Smith as director ofThe Flash.
At the time the reason seemed to be that the studio was, understandably, nervous to hand off such an important film to a first time feature director. In stepped Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Confirmation) and production got on track, with Famuyiwa overseeing the hiring of some key The Flash cast, including Kiersey Clemons as Iris West and Billy Crudup as Barry Allen’s father. But now the film is back in rocky territory, with Famuyiwa deciding to leave the project.
Creative differences seems to be the cause of the split, as is often the case on movies of this scale. Famuyiwa issued the following statement to The Hollywood Reporter:
“I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor, and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Brothers, DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”
Unless Famuyiwa is replaced quickly, The Flash may miss its March 2017 start date. If that happens it will no doubt severely delay the film’s release since star Ezra Miller already has another project set to film in the summer of 2017. In that scenario it’s highly unlikely we’ll see a solo The Flash film hitting theaters on its original March 16, 2018 date.
Until all of that gets sorted out, we can at least enjoy this small taste of Miller as the scarlet speedster from Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
