SNL spoofs Stranger Things – You know you’ve made it into the big leagues of pop culture when Saturday Night Live does a sketch inspired by your work – which is what happened this weekend when the show spoofed Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things.

The skit tackles one of the enduring questions from the first season – not what happened to Eleven, but where were Lucas’ parents? Lucas was able to run around doing whatever he wanted – almost as if the Duffer Brothers forgot to include his family in the story. That changes here.

Short film Givertaker reminds you to be careful what you wish for – Movies.com’s Senior Editor Peter S. Hall has teamed up with filmmaker Paul Gandersman to create Givertaker – a new short film that feels like Goosebumps for grown-ups in all the right ways.

Don Coscarelli says Bubba Ho-Tep sequel still in the works – While filmmaker Don Coscarelli might not have achieved mega mainstream success, he’s certainly a household name in the homes of horror fans. The man who gave us the Phantasm franchise is out promoting the newest installment, Ravager, but still found time to talk about one of his other beloved films – Bubba Ho-Tep.

That film found Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis (as Elvis and JFK, respectively) fighting a mummy at a nursing home. For years, Coscarelli has talked about making a sequel, titled Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, but it’s never quite come together (although at one point, Campbell dropped out and was replaced by Ron Perlman – who was set to be joined by Paul Giamatti as Col. Parker – which sounded brilliant).

While there’s no movement on the project, Coscarelli assured fans during a Reddit AMA that he still intends to make the movie. The downside? His timeframe is maddeningly vague.

“I would love to do more Bubba Ho-Tep and more Elvis. That was a film I really enjoyed making. We had it set up at one time with Bruce playing opposite Paul Giamatti as Elvis’ manager Colonel Parker. Unfortunately that one fell apart. Elvis is eternal, though. We’ll get it done one day.”

So, don’t give up on the dream of seeing this sequel someday – just don’t hold your breath waiting for it.

New Resident Evil: The Final Chapter trailer debuts at NYCC – The Resident Evil film franchise might be winding down, but never let it be said that Milla Jovovich and company aren’t going out with a bang.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson told New York Comic Con attendees that this new (and presumably final) installment in the series is returning to its horror roots – but that’s not so easily discerned in this new trailer.

The teaser clip features lots of action (and lots of zombies, and too much Guns ‘n Roses for my tastes…), but not much in the way of frights. That’s okay, though – I don’t come to RE for jumps scares these days.

Get ready to burn Raccoon City to the ground when Resident Evil: The Final Chapter shambles into theaters this January.

Ash vs. Evil Dead locks in a third season – The second season of Starz’s hilariously gory Evil Dead spinoff, Ash vs. Evil Dead has just gotten underway, but the cable network is ready for more bloody Deadite action – and has given the show the greenlight for a third season set to air in 2017.

Season three will feature another ten 30-minute episodes wherein Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his crew will try to save the world from the evil unleashed by The Necronomicon. Expect lots of laughs, carnage, and general buffoonery.

Season two of Ash vs. Evil Dead airs Sunday nights on Starz. Check out the Not Safe For Work trailer below.

Horror on the Horizon

We’re in Halloween season, but the week of October 14 is surprisingly empty when it comes to horror movie releases. If you’re looking for a fright flick to get you in the mood for the holiday, you’ll have to look on home video.

Things pick up on October 21, at least. Fans who haven’t caught Rob Zombie’s killer clown flick 31 on VOD can find it in select theaters. Like all of Zombie’s cinema, 31 is sure to be divisive. Fans of his work will find things to enjoy – while those who find him a one-trick pony won’t likely be swayed into changing their opinion after watching this.

Also opening nationwide is Ouija: Origin of Evil, which is the sequel to Ouija from a few years back. This prequel takes us back to the past for a story about the evil board’s origins. It doesn’t look particularly groundbreaking, but maybe there’s some fun to be had in it.

Horror on Home Video

While the multiplex may not be overflowing with titles, home video has you covered. October 18 brings us the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of Pan’s Labyrinth. Also releasing on that Tuesday are the updated version of Vampyres, a new Bride of Re-Animator disc, and the Child’s Play collector’s edition.

The following week brings us an amazing Shout Factory release of Exorcist III, as well as a 3 disc Blue Underground release of Lucio Fulci’s Manhattan Baby.
