‘This is Us’ star Milo Ventimiglia talks about that premiere twist

If you’re done bawling your eyes out at the “This Is Us” premiere, we’ve got some wise words from Milo Ventimiglia about how that adoption twist will affect the show.

In what was already a fantastic pilot episode, “This Is Us” delivered a last minute surprise to link all our characters together beyond the fact that a few of them shared the same birthday — they’re actually all part of the same family.

Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) story is insanely emotional, but it also takes place 36 years earlier than the other stories, in 1980. The loss of their third child during delivery would be a devastating blow for the couple, if not for an auspicious run-in with a fireman at the hospital, who is dropping off an abandoned baby to the hospital nursery.

That baby, as it turns out, is Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and Jack and Rebecca’s surviving twins are Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley).

This surprise link between the characters not only adds a great new depth to all these people, it also means we’ll be jumping between timelines all season as Jack and Rebecca raise the three children we’ll be following along with in the future.

The aspect of this storyline we’re most excited to see is how “This Is Us” will deal with the concept of raising an adopted black child in a white family in the ’80s.

Milo Ventimiglia hopes that the show can do the issue justice. “I think in a time where we definitely are very divisive in culture right now, I think hopefully it addresses a nature of coming together and being understanding of one another … We’re all people, we’re all trying to be happy, we’re all trying to have a good life, so maybe we should try supporting one another, look out for one another, and express more love than hate and misunderstanding,” Ventimiglia says.

“This is Us” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NCB.
