TV Query: Why did Rumple cut his hair on ‘Once Upon a Time?’

Rumplestiltskin’s (Robert Carlyle) lovely locks have gone away on “Once Upon a Time,” and we’re starting to seriously miss his shaggy-haired look.

So why the new ‘do?

Metaphorically, Rumple cut his hair in an attempt to show he was willing to change his nefarious ways for Belle (Emilie de Ravin). An attempt that failed for the most part, especially given his new relationship with the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla).

In actuality, the new look is thanks to Robert Carlyle’s upcoming movie, “Trainspotting 2.” The actor spent the summer hiatus filming a sequel to his popular ’90s flick, and the character called for him to crop his hair short and grow a pretty retro mustache.

You can catch “Trainspotting 2” in March 2017, but don’t expect to find Carlyle in a similar role to Rumplestiltskin. Begbie is even more unpredictable and violent than Carlyle’s fairytale counterpart.

Rumple’s first few episodes of “Once Upon a Time” Season 6 actually featured a very convincing wig on Carlyle. We can probably expect to see this wig again during any flashbacks to the Enchanted Forest, since we’re not sure Rumplestiltskin could pull of the same manic magician look without the untamed curls.

Who’s to say if Carlyle will grow his hair back in Season 6, but honestly, we’re kind of digging the new look.

“Once Upon a Time” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
